Three sessions are devoted to skills such as rotary cutting, measuring, and use of rulers, block construction, proper piecing and pressing of quilt top, and application of borders. In the 4th session, we will learn the process of making and applying the binding to your quilted project.

In the interest of instruction time, please purchase your materials before the first class session. A 10 percent discount is applied for all materials purchased for classes at Heart and Hand. Sunday Challege Class

Sunday, Sept. 23, 1-5 p.m.

Cost: $50 plus tax

This is a quilting class for the more experienced quilt maker who wishes to try a new technique or pattern. We are exploring the “Collage” technique of Laura Heine (fiberworks-heine.com) in this class session. Class sample is from the pattern “Making Fish!”
Once you understand the concept of Laura’s collage technique, you may apply it to any of her patterns. You may make a “fish” with us, or use the techniques to make another of Laura’s patterns. See our collection of patterns in the store.
This technique is a bit time-consuming, so we are allowing 4 hours of work and instruction time to go through all the steps as well as discuss the decoration and quilting of your finished piece. The “fish” is a smaller project, but you may want to apply your time to one of the bigger patterns.
Once you have signed up for the class, take home your pattern of choice and supply sheet and comb through your scraps for your materials.
The class sample is for one of the fish pictured in the “Making Fish” pattern. Choose your own fish! You will not need the total amount of supplies listed on the back of the pattern, but about one-quarter that amount.
Jane will contact you with other details and suggestions before the class.

Saturday, Oct. 20, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

This quilting class explores building your free-motion quilting skills on your home machine, using a panel fabric. Choose a decorative panel and use the pre-printed picture and your imagination to decorate with quilting stitches. Skills discussed will include layering, batting, thread use, starting and stopping, free motion physical memory, and finishing techniques. If you have not tried free-motion quilting this is a good beginner class that will help you practice the feel of this technique.
Please take a supply list when you sign up, and be prepared to bring your own machine and the free-motion foot that fits it.
