We have a large display of layer cakes (10-inch squares of fabric collections) here at Heart & Hand, and we would like to share with you a few different ways of using them to create great quilts. When using a layer cake collection, you have no worries about color matching, as they are all one collection meant to go together. Some projects demonstrated in this class require purchase of a background and border fabric. In our Layer Cake Lab quilting class, Jane will show you several ways of cutting and piecing your layer cakes into various blocks, and discuss settings and designs.
Bring a layer cake of your own, or use the 10-inch squares provided in the class. Go home with several examples of blocks pieced with the most common rulers you own, and some specialty rulers provided in class that will be for sale.

Many quilters have a supply of finished tops that never seem to get quilted. A walking foot can be used to do much more than straight line quilting on your projects. In this quilting class, let’s explore different ways of using a walking foot with grids, plaids, gentle curves, and more. Bring a small basted project of your own, or explore using a quilt sandwich provided in class. Your own machine and a walking foot that fits it is needed for this class. If your machine does not currently have one, see your sewing machine dealer for one that will fit your model. Other subjects that will be covered in this class are: pressing, basting, and marking your quilt top; smooth starting and stopping your quilting; types of thread; and other supplies that are helpful.

Sunday Challenge Class: February
TIME and DATES: PICK ONE

Sunday, Feb. 18, 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Cost: $30 plus tax (ruler not included)

Learn curved piecing using the Sew Kind of Wonderful Quick Curve Ruler in this class. Several of our class projects have used this ruler in the past, but this class exposes you to several different patterns by this company and how the ruler is used with each. This is a “lab” class that teaches you the technique of using the ruler, so there is no finished quilt project. However this ruler opens up a lot of doors to cutting and piecing curves, and you will be inspired to use it in a project of your own. We will practice cutting blocks with your scrap fabrics, and study in detail some of the company’s patterns. Purchase of the Quick Curve Ruler is necessary for this class. Various Sew Kind of Wonderful patterns will be available for purchase, but are not mandatory. See supply list.
